Why Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev's son, Matteo, missed their wedding
Newlyweds Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev celebrated their love in front of almost all of their loved ones.
Noticeably missing from their August 2022 nuptials in Paris was their son, 2-year-old Matteo, who was set to bear the couple’s rings.
But there was a totally understandable reason for the little one’s absence.
“He was throwing up,” Bella, 39, told E! News, adding that she and Chigvintsev, 40, weren’t aware of the situation until they were already at the altar.
“‘The Nutcracker’ plays, and we’re like looking down the aisle, and I’m like, ‘Where is he?'” the WWE star recalled, explaining that her brother, JJ Garcia, eventually put his hand on her and said, “‘Here’s the rings. Matteo’s vomiting. Just, you know, continue to get married.'”

The “Total Bellas” alum said she instantly “turned white.”
“We both don’t even remember the ring part because we both kept looking at each other like, ‘Are we terrible parents? Like, putting our rings on, and we were just told our son is vomiting in the back?'” she remembered thinking.
The wrestler-turned-reality star made sure to note that someone took Matteo “back to the hotel” and that he “ended up being OK,” but she’s still “sad” they “don’t have that moment.”
Her “Dancing With the Stars” pro hubby quipped that the toddler must’ve gotten “too excited” about his ring bearer duties.
Given that the pair planned their big day in just four weeks — a decision Bella does “not suggest” — they had no choice but to roll with the numerous punches that came their way.
“For me, when things didn’t work out, I was just like, ‘Whatever, you know, whatever does [happen] is meant to be,’ and it kind of made it more magical,” she shared, emphasizing that there was no room for any “bride or groomzillas.”
Bella and Chigvintsev met while competing together on Season 25 of “DWTS” in 2017, while she was still engaged to John Cena.
She called off her engagement to the WWE Superstar in April 2018 and began dating the ballroom dancer later that year.
The duo confirmed their relationship status in early 2019 and were engaged before the year’s end.
They welcomed Matteo in August 2020.

As for her last-minute, unconventional decision to wear a dress she’d purchased to wear while marrying Cena to tie the knot with Chigvintsev, Bella told Us Weekly last month, “I had the moment with that dress … when I saw it. … I was like, ‘Wait, why should I not wear what I love? Because of my past?’ It just didn’t make sense to me.”
While twin sister Brie Bella didn’t necessarily support the wardrobe selection, the “Nikki Bella Says I Do” star told the outlet that Chigvintsev was surprisingly “cool about it.”
