During an interview with Variety, which was published on December 11, Jennifer insisted that Matt’s mental health was fine before his death, explaining he’d been in regular communication with her former co-star.

Jennifer Insists Matthew Was In A Good Place Before His Death
“He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know,” Jennifer said as she wiped away tears, and her friend and Morning Show co-star Reese Witherspoon comforted her. “I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy.”
Matthew had been open about his past struggled with substance abuse. In a 2021 memoir, the beloved actor admitted to struggling with addiction while filming Friends, saying he forgets filming iconic scenes since he’d be high on set at times.

The Friends cast proved "I'll Be There For You" was more than just their theme song, as they continued to stay friends long after the show ended.
However, Jennifer said Matthew had been doing well before his passing, dispelling rumors that it may have been an overdose or self-inflicted (his death remains under investigation, though illicit substances were ruled out).
“I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy,” the actress continued. “He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”
Jennifer Expressed Gratitude For ‘Friends’ Fans
Matthew was one of six central cast mates in Friends, with the show spurring him into fame thanks to his portrayal of Chandler Bing. Jennifer said the response from Friends fans following his death has been emotional.
“It’s so beautiful,” she continued. “I hope he can know that he was loved in a way he never thought he was.” Of Matthew’s onscreen character, Jennifer added, “His way of speaking created a whole different world,” she said. “We went with his lead, in a way. It just added something to our joy.”
Reese – who made a brief appearance on Friends in the ‘90s as Jennifer’s onscreen character – also reflected on Matthew’s charisma as well as how close all the co-stars remained, even years after the show ended.
“You all were so close. It’s incredible what was born of those friendships, and how you guys have always taken care of each other for years and years.,” Reese reflected, while trying to comfort Jen. “It’s really beautiful and set standards for our business, as well, with the way you respected each other.”
“I remember going home and going, oh, they’re in another league. They’re on another planet on comedy levels that I’ve never seen my entire life, pivoting on,” she added of her experience on the show.
